رَبَّنَا وَلَا تُحَمِّلْنَا مَا لَا طَاقَةَ لَنَا بِهِ ۖ وَاعْفُ عَنَّا وَاغْفِرْ لَنَا وَارْحَمْنَا ۚ
Our Lord, and do not place upon us a burden which we have no strength to bear. Pardon us, forgive us, and have mercy upon us.
Rabbana wala tuhammilna ma la taqata lana bih, wa'fu 'anna waghfir lana warhamna
When to Read
This profound supplication is part of the concluding verses of Surah Al-Baqarah, a treasure trove of guidance and mercy from Allah. We can and should recite these verses regularly, especially as part of our daily prayers (Salah) after the Tashahhud, as recommended by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. It's a powerful way to seek Allah's relief from overwhelming difficulties, both worldly and spiritual. When facing trials, anxieties, or situations that feel too difficult to handle, this dua serves as a direct appeal to our Creator for strength and ease.
How to Read
This is a direct verse from the Quran, so its recitation is inherently blessed. Recite it with sincere intention and full presence of heart, reflecting on the meaning of each word. As part of the final supplications in prayer, it's often recited after the Tashahhud and before the Tasleem (final salutations). Maintain humility and a deep reliance on Allah's power and mercy as you utter these words.
Virtues & Benefits
This verse is a powerful testament to Allah's infinite mercy and understanding of human limitations. By reciting it, we acknowledge our dependence on Allah and His ability to lighten our burdens. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ mentioned that Allah has indeed responded to this plea for all His believing servants. In a hadith narrated by Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet ﷺ said: 'When any of you recites the last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah, they will be sufficient for him.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 4008, Sahih Muslim 806). The scholars explain that 'sufficient' here can mean protection from hardship, sufficient for night prayers, or sufficient against Satan. This indicates the immense protection and blessing associated with these verses.
Source & Authentication
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'Whoever recites the last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah at night, they will suffice him.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 4008, Sahih Muslim 806). The verses in question are: 'The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and [so have] the believers. All of them have believed in Allah and His angels and His books and His messengers, [saying], "We make no distinction between any of His messengers." And they say, "We hear and we obey, [we seek] forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the [final] destination."' (Al-Baqarah 2:285) followed by the dua we are discussing: 'Our Lord, and do not place upon us a burden which we have no strength to bear. Pardon us, forgive us, and have mercy upon us. You are our protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people.' (Al-Baqarah 2:286)
