QuranQuran 2:201

رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ

Our Lord, give us in this world [that which is] good and in the Hereafter [that which is] good and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.

Rabbana atina fid dunya hasanah, wa fil akhirati hasanah, wa qina 'adhaban-nar

When to Read

This is a foundational dua that can be recited at any time. It is particularly poignant to remember during times of personal supplication, after obligatory prayers, or whenever one reflects on the temporary nature of this life and the eternal reality of the Hereafter. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself used to recite this dua frequently, highlighting its comprehensive nature.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and full conviction in Allah's power to grant it. Raise your hands in supplication as is the Sunnah, facing the Qiblah if possible. Focus on the meaning: acknowledging Allah as our Lord, asking for goodness in our worldly life – encompassing health, sustenance, knowledge, righteous relationships, and peace – and for goodness in the Hereafter, which is ultimately the abode of eternal reward. Finally, implore Allah's protection from the Hellfire, the most grievous of punishments. Remember that dua is a conversation with your Creator, so pour your heart into it.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates a request for well-being in both the transient world and the eternal Hereafter. It is a balanced plea that avoids focusing solely on worldly desires or neglecting the ultimate goal of Paradise. Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ often recited this dua, saying: "Allah grants wealth to whomsoever He wills, and He grants it to 'Umar (bin Al-Khattab) among them." (Sahih al-Bukhari 4134, Sahih Muslim 4094). This shows that seeking 'hasana' (goodness) in this world includes righteous provisions and blessings that can be used for the sake of Allah. By asking for goodness in both realms and protection from the Fire, the believer seeks comprehensive well-being and salvation, a complete package of mercy from Allah.
