This is a powerful dua for times of extreme distress, when feeling overwhelmed, or when acknowledging personal shortcomings and seeking Allah's forgiveness. It's also a beautiful supplication to make during night prayers (Qiyam al-Layl) as Prophet Yunus (peace be upon him) called upon Allah in darkness.

Allah describes this dua as one that He responded to: 'So We responded to him and saved him from the distress. And thus do We save the believers.' (Al-Anbiya 21:88). This verse clearly indicates that this supplication is a means of rescue and salvation from severe trials.
