QuranQuran 14:35-36

And [mention, O Muhammad], when Abraham said, 'My Lord, make this city secure and keep me and my children away from worshipping idols. My Lord, indeed they [idols] have misled many among the people. So whoever follows me is of me; and whoever disobeys me – then indeed, You are Forgiving and Merciful.'

Wa idh qāla Ibrāhīmu Rabbi ajʿal hādhal-balada āminan waj-nubnī wa banīya an naʿbudal-aṣnām. Rabbi innahunna aḍlalna kathīran minal-nāsi faman tabiʿanī fa-innahu minnī wa man ʿaṣānī fa-innaka Ghafūrur-Raḥīm.

When to Read

We often find ourselves asking Allah for various needs in our daily lives, but how often do we specifically ask for protection from shirk? Prophet Ibrahim's ﷺ supplication reminds us of the paramount importance of safeguarding our monotheism. You might recite this powerful dua when: * You feel the subtle pulls of materialism or worldly attachments that could distract you from Allah's singular right to worship. * You're making dua for your children, deeply wanting them to grow up with a firm grounding in Tawhid, far from any form of polytheism or devotion to other than Allah. * You're reflecting on the challenges of modern society, where various ideologies or trends might subtly chip away at sincere submission to Allah alone. * You're building or starting something new – a family, a home, a community – and wish to establish it upon the purest form of worship. * Any moment you wish to renew your commitment to Allah's Oneness and seek His ultimate protection against all forms of shirk, both manifest and hidden.

How to Read

Making dua is a conversation with Allah, so when we utter the words of Prophet Ibrahim ﷺ, let's do so with our hearts fully present. Here’s how you can approach this profound supplication: * **Feel the weight of Tawhid:** Understand that this dua is about the very foundation of Islam – Allah's absolute oneness. Recall Prophet Ibrahim's ﷺ unwavering stance against his people's idolatry and his deep love for Allah. * **Intend sincerity:** Your intention should be purely to seek Allah’s protection for yourself and your family from any belief or action that compromises Tawhid. It's not just about avoiding physical idols, but also the 'idols' of ego, desires, or placing undue reliance on creation. * **Reflect on your progeny:** As you say 'and my children,' ponder your role in their spiritual upbringing. This isn't a passive request; it's a prayer that inspires you to actively teach them, guide them, and be a good example in upholding Tawhid. * **Combine with action:** A dua is potent when it fuels action. After making this supplication, strive to learn more about shirk, its various forms, and how to guard against it. Educate your family. Make efforts to live a life centered on Allah alone. * **Have certainty in response:** Be confident that Allah, the Most High, hears your dua and will protect those who sincerely turn to Him from falling into error.

Virtues & Benefits

Prophet Ibrahim's ﷺ supplication isn't merely words; it's a profound lesson and a source of immense blessings for us. Reflecting on this dua helps us understand its multifaceted benefits: * **The Ultimate Protection:** At its core, this dua is a shield against shirk – the gravest sin. It's a direct plea to Allah to safeguard our hearts, minds, and actions from associating partners with Him, ensuring our worship remains purely for Him alone. * **A Legacy for Generations:** Notice how Ibrahim ﷺ specifically prayed for his children. This underscores our immense responsibility to pass on the torch of pure monotheism to the next generation, seeking Allah's aid in their spiritual protection and guidance. * **Following a Prophetic Path:** By reciting this dua, you walk in the footsteps of a prophet whom Allah chose as His *Khalil* (intimate friend). His struggle against idolatry teaches us courage, steadfastness, and reliance on Allah in upholding Tawhid. * **Awareness of Shirk's Dangers:** The verse continues with Ibrahim's ﷺ acknowledgment that idols 'have misled many among the people.' This serves as a vital reminder of how subtly shirk can creep into societies and lives, urging us to remain vigilant and seek Allah’s refuge constantly. * **Holistic Security:** While primarily focused on spiritual protection, the dua also starts by asking Allah to make the city secure. This shows us that true security encompasses both physical safety and spiritual well-being, both emanating from Allah's grace. * **Strengthening Tawakkul:** Making this dua is an act of complete dependence on Allah. It reinforces our *tawakkul*, our trust that only Allah can protect us from falling into error and keep us firm on the straight path.
