ٱهۡدِنَا ٱلصِّرَٰطَ ٱلۡمُسۡتَقِيمَ
Guide us to the straight path.
Ihdina-s-sirata-l-mustaqeem
When to Read
This foundational verse is recited by every Muslim at least 17 times a day during the obligatory prayers (Salah). Beyond prayer, it’s a powerful supplication to make throughout the day whenever one feels lost, uncertain, or simply wishes to reaffirm their commitment to Allah's way. It's particularly relevant when facing significant decisions, seeking clarity on a matter, or when feeling tempted by wrongdoings. Making it a habit to consciously recite and reflect upon this dua strengthens one's connection to Allah and their resolve to stay on the path He is pleased with.
How to Read
This verse is part of the opening chapter of the Quran, Al-Fatihah. It is recited during the standing (Qiyam) portion of the prayer, after reciting Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim. When reciting outside of prayer, it should be done with sincere intention and a humble heart, acknowledging Allah's sole power to guide. Focus on the meaning of 'the straight path' – which encompasses all acts of obedience to Allah, avoiding His prohibitions, and following the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. It's a plea for continuous guidance, not a one-time request.
Virtues & Benefits
Reciting Al-Fatihah, which contains this essential dua, is considered the greatest chapter of the Quran. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said about Al-Fatihah: 'It is the Mother of the Book, it is Umm Al-Kitab, it is the seven oft-repeated verses, and it is the Glorious Quran that was given to me.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 4704). The specific request for guidance to the 'straight path' is the core objective of a believer's life. This path leads to success in this life and the hereafter. Allah tells us in the Quran: 'And this is My path, which is straight. So follow it; and do not follow [other] ways, lest they part you far separated from His way.' (Al-An'am 6:153). Seeking this guidance purifies the heart, clarifies intention, and protects one from deviation.
