Dua for Purification from Sins

Quranic Duas
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 169

"O Allah, purify me with water, snow, and hail. Cleanse me from sins just as a white garment is cleansed from dirt. And keep me away from my sins just as You have kept the East and West far apart."

When to Read

This powerful supplication is particularly fitting after performing ablution (wudu). The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would often make this dua after his wudu, seeking spiritual purity alongside the physical cleanliness achieved. It's also a beautiful dua to recite at any time you feel the need to seek Allah's forgiveness and a fresh start, perhaps before prayer, after a mistake, or simply as a regular part of your remembrance.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and deep reflection. Imagine the purifying effect of water, snow, and hail washing away your sins. Visualize the stark contrast between pure white and stained fabric, and ask Allah to make your heart and actions as pure. The intention should be a sincere plea for Allah's mercy and a commitment to avoid future transgressions. Make sure to pronounce the Arabic words clearly, focusing on the meaning behind each phrase.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encompasses a comprehensive request for purification: from physical impurities (symbolized by water, snow, hail) and, more importantly, from the spiritual stain of sins. The comparison to cleaning a white garment highlights the desire for complete cleansing, leaving no trace of wrongdoing. The vast distance between East and West serves as a potent metaphor for asking Allah to distance us from our sins, making it almost impossible for them to approach us again. It's a profound expression of reliance on Allah for spiritual hygiene and protection.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him): Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: When any one of you performs ablution (wudu), he should say: 'O Allah, purify me with water, snow, and hail. Cleanse me from sins just as a white garment is cleansed from dirt. And keep me away from my sins just as You have kept the East and West far apart.'
