اللَّهُمَّ عَافِنِي فِي بَصَرِي، اللَّهُمَّ عَافِنِي فِي سَمْعِي، اللَّهُمَّ عَافِنِي فِي بَصَرِي، ثَلاثًا
O Allah, grant me health in my sight, O Allah, grant me health in my hearing, O Allah, grant me health in my sight, three times.
Allahumma 'afini fi basari, Allahumma 'afini fi sam'i, Allahumma 'afini fi basari, thalathan
When to Read
This powerful dua is a supplication for Allah's protection over our senses, particularly our sight and hearing. It's recommended to recite it especially upon waking, after Fajr prayer, or anytime you feel a need to consciously ask Allah to safeguard these vital faculties. We ask Allah to protect our sight from what is displeasing to Him and to ensure we use it for His obedience. Similarly, we ask for protection of our hearing from what is unlawful to listen to and to use it for beneficial purposes.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincere intention and full conviction, believing in Allah's power to grant protection. Raising your hands slightly while making dua is a sunnah practice, though not strictly required for this specific supplication. It's best to say it clearly and thoughtfully, reflecting on each word and its meaning. Repeating it three times, as the hadith mentions for 'basari' (sight), emphasizes the importance we place on this request. Imagine Allah's mercy enveloping you as you speak.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua is a direct plea to Allah for well-being and preservation of our senses. Our sight and hearing are immense blessings. By asking for their protection, we acknowledge that they are ultimately from Allah and can be taken away or afflicted. Safeguarding our sight means asking Allah to protect us from looking at haram (forbidden) things, and to grant us the ability to see signs of Allah in creation. Similarly, protecting our hearing means avoiding listening to backbiting, gossip, or other impermissible speech. This habit of asking Allah for protection cultivates a constant state of reliance ('tawakkul') on Him and reminds us to be mindful of how we use our senses for His pleasure.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to say, when morning came: 'O Allah, grant me health in my sight, O Allah, grant me health in my hearing, O Allah, grant me health in my sight, three times. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from disbelief and poverty. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the torment of the grave, there is no god but You.'
