O Allah, I seek refuge in You from anxiety and sorrow, from weakness and laziness, from stinginess and cowardice, from the burden of debt and from being overpowered by men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-ḥazani, wal-ʿajzi wal-kasali, wal-bukhli wal-jubni, wa ḍalaʿid-dayni wa ghalabatir-rijal.

When to Read

This is a comprehensive dua that the Prophet ﷺ himself used to recite frequently, and it’s especially beneficial when you find yourself burdened by life's difficulties. Think of those moments when worries (hamm) weigh heavily on your heart, or when you feel a deep sorrow (hazn) you can't quite shake. If you're struggling with a lack of motivation or physical ability (ajz wal-kasal), or if financial pressures, particularly debt (dala'id-dayn), are causing you distress, this dua is a powerful shield. It's also for when you feel overwhelmed by others' demands or power (ghalabatir-rijal). Make it a regular part of your morning and evening remembrances, or recite it anytime you feel any of these states taking hold. It's a prayer for all-encompassing well-being.

How to Read

To truly benefit from this dua, recite it with full presence of heart, understanding the depth of each plea. Don't just let the words pass your lips; reflect on what you are asking Allah to protect you from. When you say 'minal-hammi wal-hazani,' think about the specific anxieties or sadness you might be experiencing. When you ask for refuge from 'dala'id-dayni,' truly acknowledge any financial burdens you carry and place your trust in Allah for relief. This dua is a profound act of submission and reliance on Allah's power, so turn to Him with humility and conviction that He alone can grant this protection.

Virtues & Benefits

This profound supplication, taught and regularly recited by the Prophet ﷺ, offers comprehensive protection that extends to nearly every aspect of a believer's life. It isn't merely a list of things to avoid; it’s a plea for soundness in mind, body, character, and worldly affairs. By seeking refuge from **'hamm' (anxiety)** and **'hazn' (sorrow)**, you're asking Allah to protect your mental and emotional well-being from the crushing weight of future worries and past regrets. This is a balm for the soul in a world full of stressors. The plea against **'ajz' (weakness)** and **'kasal' (laziness)** is about productivity and spiritual vitality. It's asking Allah to grant you the strength and energy to fulfill your obligations, both worldly and religious, and to overcome inertia that hinders growth. Protecting from **'bukhl' (stinginess)** and **'jubn' (cowardice)** is about cultivating a noble character. It seeks Allah's help to be generous, brave, and resolute in doing what is right, rather than being held back by fear or attachment to worldly possessions. Finally, the refuge from **'dala'id-dayn' (the burden of debt)** and **'ghalabatir-rijal' (being overpowered by men)** addresses financial stability and personal dignity. It's a direct appeal for financial ease and independence, as well as protection from oppression, injustice, or undue influence from others. The Prophet ﷺ often stressed the severity of debt, even making dua for the deceased to be free of it before offering the funeral prayer, highlighting its profound impact. This dua offers solace and a path to seeking Allah's aid in these critical areas.
