اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ مُنْكَرَاتِ الأَخْلاَقِ وَالأَعْمَالِ وَالأَهْوَاءِ

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the detestable morals, deeds, and desires.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min munkaratil akhlaqi wal a'mali wal ahwa'

When to Read

This is a comprehensive dua that can be recited at any time, particularly during moments when you feel susceptible to temptation or when you witness morally questionable situations. It's especially potent when made after obligatory prayers or during the quiet hours of the night. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this to his companions, emphasizing its importance in safeguarding oneself against spiritual and moral decay.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and heartfelt conviction. Focus on the meaning of seeking Allah's protection from that which is displeasing to Him. Raising your hands slightly, as was the practice of the Prophet ﷺ when making dua, can enhance the feeling of supplication. Reflect on the specific temptations and negative inclinations you wish to be shielded from as you utter the words.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encompasses seeking protection from three interconnected evils: detestable morals (like pride, envy, or harshness), detestable deeds (such as backbiting, lying, or oppression), and detestable desires (those that lead one away from Allah and His pleasure). By reciting this, you actively engage in safeguarding your character, actions, and inner inclinations. It's a proactive measure against falling into sin and straying from the straight path, seeking Allah's grace to remain steadfast.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet ﷺ used to supplicate: 'Allahumma inni as'alukal huda wat-tuqa wal 'afafa wal ghina' (O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and contentment).' And Abdullah bin Mas'ud said: 'The Prophet ﷺ used to seek refuge in Allah from the evil of what is detestable: Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min munkaratil akhlaqi wal a'mali wal ahwa' (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the detestable morals, deeds, and desires).'
