Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 5893

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from anxiety and sorrow, I seek refuge in You from helplessness and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from being overwhelmed by debt and overcome by men (in authority).

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhli, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabad-dayni wa qahrir-rijali.

When to Read

This is a comprehensive dua that can be recited at any time, particularly when facing feelings of worry, sadness, or financial pressure. It's excellent to make it a regular part of your morning and evening supplications (Adhkar), as well as during times of specific need or concern about debt and overwhelming situations.

How to Read

Recite this dua sincerely and with conviction, understanding the meaning of each phrase. Raise your hands as you do so, following the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Focus on the absolute reliance you are placing on Allah. Repeating it multiple times can help solidify its intention in your heart.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a powerful shield against various forms of distress. Seeking refuge in Allah from anxiety and sorrow ('hamm' and 'hazan') protects the heart and mind. Asking for protection from helplessness and laziness ('ajz' and 'kasal') helps maintain spiritual and physical well-being. Guarding against cowardice and stinginess ('jubn' and 'bukhl') promotes strength of character and generosity. Most importantly for this topic, seeking refuge from being overwhelmed by debt ('ghalabad-dayn') and overcome by men ('qahr ar-rijal') is a direct supplication for financial freedom and relief from oppressive circumstances.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet ﷺ used to say: "Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhli, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabad-dayni wa qahrir-rijali." (Sahih al-Bukhari 5893). This hadith highlights how the Prophet ﷺ, despite his high status, consistently turned to Allah for protection against common human struggles, including the burden of debt and the oppressive nature of forceful people.
