ٱهۡدِنَا ٱلصِّرَٰطَ ٱلۡمُسۡتَقِيمَ
Guide us to the straight path.
Ihdina as-siratal-mustaqim
When to Read
This is the most frequently recited dua in the Quran, forming the heart of Surah Al-Fatihah. We are meant to say it multiple times a day in our obligatory prayers (Salah). Beyond prayer, it’s a powerful supplication to consciously make when feeling lost, uncertain about a decision, or simply to reinforce our commitment to living according to Allah's will.
How to Read
Recite this ayah with sincere intention and a humble heart, especially during prayer. Understand its meaning as you say it: you are asking the Most High, the Knower of all things, to direct you to the path that leads to His pleasure and Paradise. Recognize that 'the straight path' encompasses all aspects of life – our beliefs, actions, and intentions – aligning them with the teachings of the Quran and Sunnah.
Virtues & Benefits
Reciting Surah Al-Fatihah, which contains this essential dua, is fundamental to the validity of our prayers. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said about Al-Fatihah: 'It is the Mother of the Book, the Mother of the Quran, the seven oft-repeated verses, and the magnificent Quran.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 4704). By asking for guidance to the straight path, we are seeking Allah's help to stay away from misguidance, innovation, and sin. It’s a constant reminder that we are dependent on Allah for direction in all our affairs, seeking His help to live a life pleasing to Him.
