Parents
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 5107

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي وَلِوَالدَيَّ وَارْحَمْهُمَا كَمَا رَبَّيَانِي صَغِيرًا

O Allah, forgive me and my parents, and have mercy on them as they cared for me when I was young.

Allahumma-ghfir li wa liwalidayya warhamhuma kama rabbayani saghira

When to Read

This is a general supplication that can be made at any time, especially after obligatory prayers. It is particularly poignant to recite it when thinking of our parents, whether they are alive or have passed away, as a continuous act of kindness and remembrance. Making dua for them is a way to fulfill our obligation towards them even after their departure from this world.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a heartfelt plea to Allah. Imagine your parents' need for your supplication and the immense reward it carries. Raising your hands can be a sign of earnestness, though it's not a strict requirement for every dua. Focus on the meaning of the words, acknowledging Allah's power to forgive and show mercy, and remembering your parents' efforts in raising you.

Virtues & Benefits

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: "When a person dies, all their deeds come to an end except for three: ongoing charity (sadaqah jariyah), beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for them." (Sahih Muslim 1631). This dua is a prime example of a righteous child praying for their parents, ensuring a continuous flow of good deeds reaches them in the grave, alleviating their burden and bringing them comfort. It reflects the deep Islamic value placed on honoring one's parents, extending that honor beyond their lifetime through prayer and remembrance.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated that Abu Hurairah said: "When a person dies, all their deeds come to an end except for three: ongoing charity (sadaqah jariyah), beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for them." (Sahih Muslim 1631). The specific wording used in the dua 'Allahumma-ghfir li wa liwalidayya warhamhuma kama rabbayani saghira' is a well-established supplication taught by the Prophet ﷺ, reflecting the essence of this principle. It encompasses seeking forgiveness for oneself and mercy for parents, directly linking it to their upbringing of us.
