بِسْمِ اللَّهِ عَلَى نَفْسِي وَأَهْلِي وَمَالِي.

In the name of Allah, (I place myself, my family, and my property under His protection).

Bismillahi 'ala nafsi wa ahli wa mali.

When to Read

This is a comprehensive dua that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught for seeking Allah's protection and blessing over oneself, one's family, and one's possessions. When we recite this dua, we are essentially entrusting our loved ones, especially our parents, and their home to Allah's care. It's a beautiful practice to say this upon entering your parents' home, or even at the beginning of your own day, extending the intention to include their well-being. Imagine your parents feeling that sense of divine protection within their own space, knowing they've been entrusted to the One who is the Best Protector.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and full conviction in Allah's power to protect. Place your hand over your heart or the doorframe as you say it, focusing on the meaning. It's a reminder of our dependence on Allah and His vast mercy. Making this a habit, perhaps after every Salah or as part of your morning remembrance (adhkar), amplifies its benefit.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates a powerful request for divine safeguarding. By invoking Allah's name upon our 'self, family, and property,' we are seeking His protection against all forms of harm – physical, spiritual, and material. For our parents, this translates to a home filled with peace, security, and barakah (blessings). It signifies that their dwelling is under the watch of the Most High, fostering a sense of serenity and calm. The Prophet ﷺ himself taught this, indicating its profound importance in seeking Allah’s pervasive care. It cultivates a mindset of reliance on Allah, which is a cornerstone of true peace.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both): The Prophet ﷺ said, "When a man enters his house and remembers Allah Almighty and Praised be He at the time of his entering and at the time of his eating, Satan says: 'You (all) have no place to spend the night and no dinner.' When he enters and does not remember Allah Almighty and Praised be He at the time of his entering, Satan says: 'You have found (your) place to spend the night.' And when he does not remember Allah Almighty and Praised be He at the time of his eating, Satan says: 'You have found (your) place to spend the night and dinner." And in another narration: The Prophet ﷺ said, "When one of you enters his house, he should say: 'O Allah, I ask You for the good of the entrance and the good of the exit, in the name of Allah we enter and in the name of Allah we leave, and in our Lord we put our trust.' And when he enters, he should say: 'O Allah, I ask You for good and blessings in it and I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil of what is in it.' And when he eats, he should mention the name of Allah. And the devil says: 'I will not spend the night here and I will not eat here.'" Another narration: The Prophet ﷺ said, "When a person enters his home and remembers Allah at the time of his entering and at the time of his eating, Satan says (to his companions): 'You have no place to pass the night nor food.' When he enters and does not remember Allah at the time of his entering, Satan says (to his companions): 'You have found a place to pass the night.' When he does not remember Allah at the time of his eating, Satan says: 'You have found (your) place to pass the night and dinner.'" *Note: While the main dua used is a shorter, widely cited version, the surrounding hadith provide broader context for remembering Allah upon entering the home and seeking His blessings for it.*
