Dua for Parents: Seeking Allah's Comfort from Grief

Parents
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 918

"Indeed, we belong to Allah, and indeed, to Him we will return. O Allah, reward me in my misfortune and grant me something better than it."

Innā lillāhi wa innā ilayhi rāji'ūn. Allāhumma-'jurnī fī muṣībatī wa-'khlifnī khayram minhā.

When to Read

This powerful supplication is recited when facing any calamity or loss that brings about grief, including the death of a loved one, significant financial hardship, or any other deeply upsetting event. It's particularly relevant for parents dealing with the profound sadness of loss or difficult circumstances, offering a path to solace and divine reward.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and a heartfelt acknowledgment of Allah's decree. Begin by acknowledging your return to Allah (Innā lillāhi wa innā ilayhi rāji'ūn), a foundational belief that grounds you in acceptance. Then, directly ask Allah for recompense in your suffering and for a better outcome (Allāhumma-'jurnī fī muṣībatī wa-'khlifnī khayram minhā). It's best recited in a state of purity (wudu) if possible, with humility and hope in Allah's mercy.

Virtues & Benefits

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ promised that whoever recites this dua when afflicted by calamity will be rewarded by Allah and will receive something better in return. This isn't just about material gain, but a profound spiritual compensation that brings peace, contentment, and strengthens one's faith in the face of hardship. It reminds us that Allah's plan is always for our ultimate good, even when it's difficult to see.

Source & Authentication

Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "If any servant (of Allah) is afflicted by a calamity and says: 'We belong to Allah and to Him we shall return. O Allah, reward me for my affliction and give me something better than it,' Allah will reward him for his affliction and give him something better than it." Umm Salamah said: When Abu Salamah died, I recited this very supplication. Allah then gave me something better than him (i.e., she married the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ).
