Parents
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 1541

O Allah, I ask You for well-being in this world and the Hereafter. O Allah, I ask You for pardon and well-being in my religion, my worldly affairs, my family, and my property. O Allah, conceal my faults and secure me from that which I fear. O Allah, protect me from before me and from behind me, from my right and from my left, and from above me, and I seek refuge in Your Magnificence from being taken from beneath me.

Allahumma inni as'alukal-'afiyata fid-dunya wal-akhirah. Allahumma inni as'alukal-'afwa wal-'afiyata fi dini wa dunyaya wa ahli wa mali. Allahum-mastur 'awrati wa amin raw'ati. Allahumma-hfadhni min bayni yadayya wa min khalfi, wa 'an yameeni, wa 'an shimalee, wa min fawqi, wa a'udhu bi-'adhamatika an ughtala min tahti.

When to Read

This comprehensive dua is perfect for reciting daily, especially in the morning after Fajr prayer, as the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us to ask for well-being ('afiyah) at the start of the day. It's a profound way to safeguard our loved ones, including our parents, by invoking Allah's protection over them. You can also make this dua specifically for your parents whenever you feel a need for extra protection for them, perhaps before they embark on a journey or during times of widespread calamity.

How to Read

Begin with sincere intention and focus. Raise your hands as you make dua, as this is a respected Sunnah. Start with praising Allah and sending salutations upon the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Recite this dua with conviction, believing in Allah's power to protect. Ensure you are in a state of purity (wudu) if possible, and face the Qiblah. The best times for dua are after obligatory prayers, during the last third of the night, between the Adhan and Iqamah, and on Friday.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encompasses a holistic request for safety and protection across all aspects of life – religious, worldly, and familial. By asking for 'afiyah (well-being/safety), we are asking Allah to shield us and our parents from all harm, physical, spiritual, and material. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ emphasized the importance of asking for 'afiyah, calling it the best of what is asked for. This dua, by its comprehensiveness, can be a powerful shield against unforeseen misfortunes and accidents, granting peace of mind to both the parents and the one making the dua.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) never neglected these supplications in the morning and the evening: 'O Allah, I ask You for well-being in my religion, my worldly affairs, my family, and my property. O Allah, conceal my faults and secure me from that which I fear. O Allah, protect me from before me and from behind me, and from my right and from my left, and from above me, and I seek refuge in Your Magnificence from being taken from beneath me.' (Sunan Abi Dawud 1541, classified as Hasan by Al-Albani). While this hadith is narrated by Ibn Umar regarding himself, its meaning and comprehensive nature make it an excellent supplication to extend to our parents, asking Allah to grant them the same protection.
