Parents
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 5145

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي وَلِوَالِدَيَّ وَارْحَمْهُمَا كَمَا رَبَّيَانِي صَغِيرًا

O Allah, forgive me and my parents, and have mercy on them as they cared for me when I was young.

Allahummaghfir li wa liwalidayya warhamhuma kama rabbayani saghira.

When to Read

This is a beautiful general supplication you can make for your parents at any time, especially after Fajr and Isha prayers. It's particularly poignant when reflecting on their sacrifices for you. Making it a habit ensures you are consistently remembering them in your prayers, even when they are no longer with us.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction, visualizing your parents and their love for you. Raise your hands in supplication as you would for any other dua. It is recommended to face the Qiblah if possible, and to begin with praising Allah and sending blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua directly addresses two core rights parents have over us: their right to our good treatment (birr al-walidayn) and our obligation to seek forgiveness for them. By asking Allah to forgive and have mercy on them as they nurtured us, we are fulfilling a profound spiritual duty. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, 'When a person dies, all their deeds come to an end except for three: an ongoing charity (sadaqah jariyah), beneficial knowledge (al-'ilm an-yanfa'u), or a righteous child who prays for them (waladun salihun yad'u lah).' This dua is a direct manifestation of a righteous child's prayer, potentially easing their burden in the grave and earning reward for both them and the one making the dua.

Source & Authentication

The hadith is often cited in discussions about children's obligations to parents. The specific wording is as found in the JSON. The context is the general importance of honoring and supplicating for parents, especially after their passing. Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'When a person dies, all their deeds come to an end except for three: an ongoing charity (sadaqah jariyah), beneficial knowledge (al-'ilm an-yanfa'u), or a righteous child who prays for them (waladun salihun yad'u lah).' (Sahih Muslim 1631). While this specific dua isn't the direct text of that hadith, it perfectly embodies the concept of a 'righteous child who prays for them', and the wording itself is established as a supplication for parents.
