Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'The Evil Eye (al-'ayn) is real, and it can take a man to the grave and a camel to the pot.' (Sahih Muslim 3017) Then he said: 'When anyone of you is to kill (his brother), he should do it in a good way. He should kill him by putting him to the sword, and he should clean the place (of blood), and he should not gloat over the face of his enemy, so as not to incite his (enemy's) hatred.' (Sahih Muslim 3018, with the context of seeking protection from harm, including that inflicted by people due to envy).
