Parents
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 5743

O Allah, Lord of mankind, remove the suffering, heal (him/her), You are the Healer, there is no healing except Your healing, a healing that leaves no illness behind.

Allahumma Rabb an-nas, adh-hib al-ba's, ishfi anta ash-shafi, la shifa'a illa shifa'uk, shifa'an la yughadiru saqama.

When to Read

This powerful dua is perfect to recite when a parent falls ill, or even when they are simply feeling unwell. You can say it directly to them, or recite it with them. It's also a beautiful supplication to make when they are recovering, asking Allah to grant them complete wellness.

How to Read

When reciting this dua for a parent, you can place your hand on the area of pain or on their forehead, if they are present and comfortable with it. Speak with sincerity and certainty in Allah's ability to heal. Make it a habit to make this dua for them regularly, not just when they are sick. Remember to also practice the Sunnah methods of seeking healing, such as using blessed olive oil and reciting specific Quranic verses for ruqyah.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua embodies total reliance on Allah (SWT) as the ultimate Healer. By calling upon Him as 'Rabb an-nas' (Lord of mankind), we acknowledge His dominion over all people and His ability to affect their well-being. The phrase 'la shifa'a illa shifa'uk' (there is no healing except Your healing) reinforces our Tawhid (Oneness of Allah) and our understanding that true cure comes only from Him. It's a beautiful way to show love and concern for our parents, fulfilling a great duty we have towards them.

‘Uthman bin Abi Al-‘As (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that he complained to Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) about a pain he felt in his body. Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said to him: “Place your hand where you feel pain in your body and say: ‘Bismillah’ (In the name of Allah) three times, and say seven times: ‘A‘udhu billahi wa qudratihi min sharri ma ajidu wa uhadhiru’ (I seek refuge in Allah and in His Power from the evil of what I feel and what I fear).’ ‘Uthman bin Abi Al-‘As said: "I did that and Allah removed the ailment from me, and I have been recommending it to my family ever since. He also reported that Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) visited him for a need. He (Uthman) sat before him. He (the Prophet) asked: 'What is the matter with you that you are sitting [in pain]?' He replied: 'I am suffering from pain in my ear.' Thereupon Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: ‘This is a pain that the *Shaytan* has visited upon the son of Adam. Place your hand on the place of pain and recite: ‘Allahumma Rabb an-nas, adh-hib al-ba’s, ishfi anta ash-shafi, la shifa’a illa shifa’uk, shifa’an la yughadiru saqama’ (“O Allah, Lord of mankind, remove the suffering, heal him, for You are the Healer. There is no healing but Your healing, a healing that leaves no disease behind.”)' He (Uthman) said: 'I did that and Allah removed the pain from me.'"
