Dua for Parents' Graves: Seeking Mercy and Forgiveness

Parents
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 963

O Allah, forgive him, have mercy on him, grant him relief, pardon him, honor his resting place, make his entrance spacious, cleanse him with water, snow, and hail. Purify him from sins just as a white garment is purified from dirt. Replace his home with a better home, his family with a better family, and his spouse with a better spouse. Admit him to Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.

Allahummaghfir lahu, warhamhu, wa 'aafihi, wa'fu 'anhu, wa akrim nuzulahu, wa wassi' mudkhalahu, waghsilhu bil-ma'i wath-thalji wal-baradi, wa naqqihi minal-khataaya kamaa yunaqqath-thawbul-abyadu minad-danasi, wa abdilhu daaran khairan min daarihi, wa ahlan khairan min ahlihi, wa zawjan khairan min zawjihi, wa adkhilhul-jannata, wa a'idhhu min 'adhab al-qabri wa min 'adhabin-naar.

When to Read

This is a comprehensive supplication recommended for reciting when visiting the graves of deceased Muslims, especially our parents. It's a profound way to remember them, seek Allah's immense mercy for them, and reflect on our own journey.

How to Read

When visiting your parents' graves, stand at a respectful distance. Face the grave, turn your Qiblah slightly if needed, and recite this dua. You can also raise your hands in supplication, as this is a recommended etiquette for dua. Maintain a solemn and reflective demeanor, remembering Allah's vast mercy and the temporary nature of this life.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this dua is a powerful act of worship that benefits the deceased immensely. It embodies the Islamic principle of continuing to send the rewards of good deeds to those who have passed on. Seeking Allah's forgiveness and mercy for them is one of the greatest gifts we can give. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us this very comprehensive supplication, highlighting its importance in seeking Allah's complete grace for the deceased, covering forgiveness, comfort in the grave, and entry into Jannah.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet of Allah (ﷺ) taught them when they visited a graveyard: 'Say: O Allah, the Lord of the inhabitants of the graveyard, the dwellers of the graves, 'A'ishah said: I asked him: What should I say? He said: Say: Peace be upon you, O dwellers of the graveyard from among the Muslims and the believers, and may Allah have mercy on those who have gone ahead of us and those who are to come later, and, Allah willing, we shall join you. (Sahih Muslim 975). Also, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: When a man dies, his deeds stop except for three: a continuous charity, knowledge that people benefit from, or a righteous child who supplicates for him. (Sahih Muslim 1631). This specific dua is attributed to the general supplication for the deceased, often used in funeral prayers and upon visiting graves, as it encompasses comprehensive requests for Allah's mercy.
