Dua for Parents' Ease in Their Final Moments

Parents
Sahih HadithSunan Abi Dawud 3691

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي وَلِوَالِدَيَّ وَارْحَمْهُمَا كَمَا رَبَّيَانِي صَغِيرًا

O Allah, forgive me and my parents, and have mercy on them as they had mercy on me when I was young.

Allahummaghfir li wa liwalidayya warhamhuma kama rabbayani saghira

When to Read

This dua is particularly poignant when one's parents are nearing the end of their lives or in their final moments. It's also a beautiful general supplication to make for them regularly, asking Allah to shower them with His mercy and forgiveness, acknowledging their sacrifices in raising us. Making it during their final moments is an extension of this ongoing duty of kindness and supplication for them.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a heartfelt connection to your parents. Focus on the meaning, remembering their efforts and sacrifices. Picture Allah's boundless mercy. It's best recited when you are in a state of wudu (ritual purity) if possible, and with your hands raised in supplication. However, the most important aspect is the intention and the heartfelt plea to Allah.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a beautiful expression of gratitude and love for parents. It acknowledges their immense role in our lives and asks Allah to reward them for their efforts, especially their nurturing during our childhood. By asking for Allah's mercy upon them, we fulfill a vital obligation of filial piety (birr al-walidayn). The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that 'When a person dies, all their deeds come to an end except for three: a Sadaqah Jariyah (continuous charity), a knowledge that is benefited from, or a righteous child who prays for them' (Sahih Muslim 1631). This dua is precisely that righteous child's prayer, seeking Allah's immense favor for our parents, especially in their most vulnerable time.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'When a person dies, all their deeds come to an end except for three: a Sadaqah Jariyah (continuous charity), a knowledge that is benefited from, or a righteous child who prays for them.' And in another narration, it is mentioned that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'The prayer of a Muslim for his Muslim brother in his absence is answered. An angel is appointed by his head; whenever he prays for his brother for something, the angel appointed for him says: "Ameen, and for you the like of it."' (Sahih Muslim 2732). This principle extends to praying for our parents, seeking Allah's response for them and ourselves.
