Parents
Sahih HadithSunan Abi Dawud 1563

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي، وَلِوَ الِدَيَّ، وَارْحَمْهُمَا كَمَا رَبَّيَانِي صَغِيرًا

O Allah, forgive me and my parents, and have mercy on them as they cared for me when I was small.

Allahumma-ghfir li, wa li-walidayya, warhamhuma kama rabbayani saghira

When to Read

This dua is perfect to recite at any time, but especially after obligatory prayers, during the night, or whenever you remember your parents. It's a beautiful way to show ongoing gratitude and seek Allah's mercy for them, particularly if they are facing difficulties or you wish for them to be content and at ease, regardless of their worldly possessions.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a heart full of love for your parents. Imagine them before you and pour your feelings into the supplication. It's recommended to raise your hands slightly, as is customary for supplication (dua). Ensure you pronounce the Arabic clearly, if possible, or focus on conveying the meaning with deep intention if pronunciation is a challenge.

Virtues & Benefits

This profound dua is a direct command from Allah (SWT) to honor our parents, even after their passing. By asking for forgiveness and mercy for them, we are fulfilling our obligation and seeking Allah's pleasure. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us this specific wording, highlighting its importance. The benefit is immense: it benefits your parents in the hereafter, softens your own heart, and is a means of attaining Allah's mercy for yourself as well. It cultivates a deep sense of gratitude and acknowledges their sacrifices, which Allah (SWT) surely appreciates.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: 'When a person dies, their deeds come to an end except for three: an ongoing charity, knowledge that is benefited from, or a righteous child who prays for them.' (Sahih Muslim 1631). While this specific dua is a request for mercy for parents, the principle of praying for them is established. Another relevant narration states: 'The supplication of a Muslim for his brother in his absence is answered. An angel is appointed by his head, and every time he prays for good for his brother, the angel appointed for him says: 'Ameen, and the like be for you.' (Sahih Muslim 2174). This underscores the power of praying for others, including our parents.
