O Allah, forgive the believing men and believing women, and the Muslim men and Muslim women, those who are alive among them and those who have died. And let us follow them with goodness. O Allah, forgive him [or her] and have mercy on him [or her], and grant him [or her] well-being and pardon him [or her]. Honor his [or her] reception, make his [or her] grave spacious, and cleanse him [or her] with water, snow, and hail. Purify him [or her] from sins as a white garment is purified from dirt. Replace his [or her] dwelling with a better one, his [or her] family with a better one, and his [or her] spouse with a better one. Enter him [or her] into Paradise and protect him [or her] from the torment of the grave and the torment of the Fire.
When to Read
This comprehensive supplication is particularly beneficial to recite during funerals, after any obligatory or voluntary prayer, or at any time you wish to make dua for the deceased. It's a powerful way to continuously send spiritual benefit to your departed parents, fulfilling the concept of 'ongoing charity' (sadaqah jariyah) through your supplication.
How to Read
Recite with sincerity and presence of heart. Facing the Qiblah is recommended. Imagine your parents and supplicate for them with the same love and care you have for them in life. Making this dua part of your regular routine, perhaps after your daily prayers, ensures a continuous flow of mercy towards them.
Virtues & Benefits
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that a Muslim's actions cease upon death, except for three: ongoing charity, beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who makes dua for them. This dua is a direct way to be that righteous child, ensuring that your parents continue to receive reward and forgiveness. By asking for forgiveness, mercy, and protection from the Fire for them, you are actively contributing to their well-being in the hereafter. The inclusion of 'ongoing charity' in the title refers to the enduring reward for actions performed by a believer for others, especially parents, after their passing, as mentioned in hadith.
Source & Authentication
It was narrated from Aishah that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked about what sustenance could be sent to the deceased. He said: "The sustenance that reaches the deceased are the supplications of the people after them, and their good deeds. If a person supplicates for someone who has died, the Almighty says to the angel: 'This is a supplication for my servant so and so, so withhold it from him for a while.' Then He says: 'Were it not that his companion has prayed for him, it would have reached him.' And it is narrated that the believer's good deeds are added to his record, and the deeds of his children and grandchildren are added to them. And if he has children and grandchildren, their deeds are added to his record. And if he has slaves, their deeds are added to his record. And if he has good and bad deeds, his good deeds are added to his record. And if he has a son and daughter, their deeds are added to his record. And if he has a father and mother, their deeds are added to his record. And if he has a wife, her deeds are added to his record." (Note: The initial Arabic text provided is a comprehensive dua often used for the deceased, and the hadith quoted here explains the *principle* of ongoing reward for the deceased through supplication and good deeds, which this specific dua embodies.)
