Marriage & Wedding
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2076

O Allah, I ask You for its (my wife's) goodness and the goodness of what You have decreed for her, and I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil of what You have decreed for her.

Allahumma inni as'aluka khairaha wa khaira ma jabaltaha 'alayhi, wa a'udhu bika min sharriha wa sharri ma jabaltaha 'alayhi.

When to Read

This dua is particularly relevant during the marriage ceremony itself, when a couple embarks on their new journey. However, it can also be recited anytime by a husband praying for his wife's well-being and a strong, supportive marital bond. When facing significant life changes like a new job, moving, illness, or any challenging transition, reciting this dua can be a way to seek Allah's blessings for your spouse to be a source of strength and comfort.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and heartfelt supplication. It is best recited with hands raised, as is customary for supplication, before Allah. Imagine the qualities you wish for your spouse – kindness, resilience, understanding – and ask Allah to grant them. Reflect on the profound trust and responsibility within marriage, and seek Allah's help in making your spouse a true pillar of support.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates seeking the best for one's spouse and seeking protection from any potential ill character or circumstances. By praying for your spouse's goodness, you are essentially praying for the well-being of your family and the harmony of your home. A spouse who is a pillar of support during difficult times is an immense blessing from Allah (SWT). The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us to seek Allah's best for ourselves and for our spouses, recognizing that true goodness and protection come only from Him. This prayer fosters mutual love, understanding, and reliance on Allah within the marriage.

Source & Authentication

When one of you marries, he should say: Allahumma inni as'aluka khairaha wa khaira ma jabaltaha 'alayhi, wa a'udhu bika min sharriha wa sharri ma jabaltaha 'alayhi (O Allah, I ask You for its goodness and the goodness of what You have decreed for her, and I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil of what You have decreed for her). And when one of you buys a servant, he should take him by the forelock and say the like of that. (Sahih Muslim 2076)
