Seeking Allah's Help for Pure Intentions After Leaving the Bathroom

Leaving Bathroom
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 7

I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, alone, without partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger. O Allah, make me among those who turn to You often in repentance, and make me among those who are pure.

Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah wahdahu la sharika lah, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan 'abduhu wa rasuluh. Allahumma'jalni minat tawwabina wajalni minal mutatahhirin.

When to Read

This dua is recited immediately after exiting the bathroom, as part of the spiritual purification that follows physical cleansing. It’s a beautiful moment to reaffirm your faith and ask Allah to keep your intentions pure in all your affairs.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a clear heart. It’s traditionally recited standing, facing the direction of the Kaaba if possible, though the intention and words are paramount. Take a moment to reflect on the meanings of the testimony of faith and the prayer for repentance and purity.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication is a powerful way to seek Allah's forgiveness and ask for His guidance. The testimony of faith ('Shahada') acknowledges Allah's oneness and the Prophet Muhammad's ﷺ prophethood, which are the foundations of our faith. Asking to be among the 'tawwabin' (those who repent often) and 'mutatahhirin' (those who purify themselves) shows our constant need for Allah's mercy and our desire to remain in a state of spiritual cleanliness, reflecting the physical cleansing we just performed. This habit helps in maintaining a constant connection with Allah and seeking His assistance in keeping our inner selves pure.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'When any one of you finishes his necessity (i.e., comes out of the toilet), he should say: I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, alone, without partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger. O Allah, make me among those who turn to You often in repentance, and make me among those who are pure.' (Sunan Abi Dawud 7, graded Hasan by some scholars)
