Leaving Bathroom
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 30

غُفْرَانَكَ، السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ

Your forgiveness, [O Allah]. Peace and the mercy of Allah be upon you [O people of the abode].

Ghufraanak, as-salaamu 'alaikum wa rahmatullaah

When to Read

This beautiful dua is recited immediately after exiting the bathroom. It’s a moment of transition, moving from a place that is often associated with impurity back into the general space. This dua serves as a spiritual 'cleanse' for our minds and hearts.

How to Read

Saying 'Ghufraanak' acknowledges our need for Allah's forgiveness, recognizing that even our bodily functions are a blessing and we may have fallen short in our remembrance of Him. The second part, 'As-salaamu 'alaikum wa rahmatullaah,' is a greeting to the angels and any present Muslims, but more importantly, it's a recognition of Allah's peace encompassing us as we re-enter the world. It's a gentle, quiet recitation, a personal connection with our Creator.

Virtues & Benefits

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua to remind us that our spiritual state is important even in mundane moments. By seeking forgiveness after using the bathroom, we acknowledge our reliance on Allah for everything. The greeting of peace signifies our return to a state of mindfulness, warding off any negative whispers or intrusive thoughts that might try to attach themselves to us after leaving a place where Shaytan resides. It reinforces our connection to Allah and His protection.

A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: When the Prophet (ﷺ) came out of the lavatory, he would say: Ghufraanak. (He would say): Glory be to You, and praise be to You; there is no god but You. (Or): O Allah, forgive me my sins. He said: Abu Dharr asked him: What is the meaning of 'Ghufraanak'? He said: I ask my Lord for forgiveness.
