غُفْرَانَكَ، الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَذْهَبَ عَنِّي الْأَذَى وَعَافَانِي

"Your forgiveness, O Allah! All praise is due to Allah Who removed from me that which was harmful and granted me well-being."

Ghufranaka, al-hamdu lillahil-ladhi adh-haba 'annil-adha wa 'afani

When to Read

This beautiful dua is recited immediately after exiting the toilet (bathroom). It's a moment of transition, moving from a place of cleansing to rejoining the world, and it's a perfect time to turn our hearts back to Allah.

How to Read

Recite this dua once after you have finished using the toilet and are about to leave the bathroom. Say it with sincerity, remembering the blessings of Allah. It's generally said quietly, but the intention and remembrance in the heart are paramount.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a profound expression of gratitude. Firstly, by asking for forgiveness ('Ghufranaka'), we acknowledge our own shortcomings and impurity, recognizing that only Allah's mercy can truly purify us. Secondly, the praise ('Al-hamdu lillah') is directed towards Allah for two specific blessings: removing harm (the waste from our bodies, which can be harmful if retained) and granting well-being (health and the ability to function). It reminds us that even the most mundane bodily functions are a blessing from Allah, worthy of our constant remembrance and thanks. This practice cultivates mindfulness and deepens our connection with Allah throughout the day, transforming ordinary moments into acts of worship.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Abu Dharr: The Prophet (ﷺ) commanded us not to face the Qiblah when relieving ourselves. He said: 'When you relieve yourselves, do not face the Qiblah, nor turn your backs to it, but face either east or west.' Abu Dharr said: 'We came to Syria and found them relieving themselves facing the Qiblah, turning their backs to it. So I said: 'This is the [wrong] way they are being punished.' He said: 'I do not know what happened to them.' He said: 'When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) died, I came to them, and they were relieving themselves facing the Qiblah, turning their backs to it.' Abu Dharr said: 'I did not come back to them until I died.' (He said) 'I used to relieve myself and say: 'I seek forgiveness from Allah' and 'All praise is due to Allah Who removed from me what was harmful and granted me well-being.'
