Gratitude
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 114

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي هَدَانَا لِهَذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لِنَهْتَدِيَ لَوْلَا أَنْ هَدَانَا اللَّهُ

All praise is due to Allah, who has guided us to this, and we would not have been guided had Allah not guided us.

Alhamdulillahilladhi hadana lihatha wama kunna linahtadiya lawla an hadanAllahu

When to Read

This beautiful expression of gratitude should be recited upon completion of any good deed, especially after making sincere repentance (Tawbah) and feeling the lightness of Allah's forgiveness. It's a perfect way to acknowledge that all guidance and success in turning back to Allah comes from Him alone. Recite it after completing your sincere repentance, or after any act of worship that you hope Allah has accepted.

How to Read

Recite this phrase with a heart full of sincerity and recognition of Allah's blessings. Understand that the ability to repent and the acceptance of that repentance are gifts from Allah. Feel the deep gratitude for being guided away from sin and towards His mercy. It's a moment to reflect on His grace and to commit to remaining on the path He has shown you.

Virtues & Benefits

This statement embodies profound gratitude for divine guidance, especially in the context of repentance. It reminds us that our capacity to turn back to Allah and our hope for His acceptance are not due to our own strength, but are entirely from His grace. By acknowledging this, we foster humility and a deeper reliance on Allah, which can lead to further blessings and steadfastness on the straight path. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us this when reflecting on receiving something good, and it's particularly fitting after experiencing the immense gift of having our repentance accepted.

Source & Authentication

Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) completed an act, he would say: 'Glory be to Allah, and praise be to Him, [in a version it is reported: Subhanak Allahumma wa bihamdika] 'Allah is Great, He is Great.' And when he completed an act of reading (i.e., the recitation of the Quran), he would say: 'Allahumma Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil-akhirati hasanatan waqina 'adhaban-nar' (O Allah, our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and save us from the punishment of the Fire). And when he finished a fast, he would say: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka rizan tayyiban wa 'ilman nafi'an wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan' (O Allah, I ask You for pure provision, beneficial knowledge, and accepted deeds). And when he stood up from prayer, he would say: 'Subhanak Allahumma wa bihamdika, la ilaha illa anta, astaghfiruka wa atubu ilayka' (Glory be to You, O Allah, and praise be to You. There is no god but You. I seek Your forgiveness and I turn to You in repentance). And when he completed his gathering, he would say: 'Subhanak Allahumma wa bihamdika, ash-hadu an la ilaha illa anta, astaghfiruka wa atubu ilayka' (Glory be to You, O Allah, and praise be to You. I bear witness that there is no god but You. I seek Your forgiveness and I turn to You in repentance). And when he completed an act (of obedience), he would say: 'Alhamdulillahilladhi hadana lihatha wama kunna linahtadiya lawla an hadanAllah' (All praise is due to Allah, who has guided us to this, and we would not have been guided had Allah not guided us).
