Narrated Anas: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, 'When Allah sends down His punishment on a people, it is inflicted on them while they are in the process of performing deeds. Thus, the people are killed either in their beds or in the marketplaces. When Allah sends down His blessings on a people, they are blessed either in their fields or in their herds. However, the people who are killed by the sword will be in the hellfire. The people who die from plague will be martyrs. The people who die from drowning will be martyrs. The people who die from illness in their bodies will be martyrs.' The Prophet (ﷺ) said, 'If a person is killed by a sword, he will be in the hellfire.' On that, the narrator asked 'O Allah's Apostle! How can this be?' The Prophet (ﷺ) replied, 'The verse says: "(15:96) Verily, We have granted you (O Muhammad) abundance of goodness." So he said, 'My Lord, what should I say?' Allah said, 'Say: "(15:97) I am Allah, and I am doing with My servants what I wish." Then the Prophet (ﷺ) said, 'This verse was revealed about the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) (15:97). If Allah wills to do good to a nation, He makes them repent, and they repent. If He wills to destroy a nation, He causes them to commit sins, and they commit sins, and He destroys them.' And then the Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'All praise is for Allah, who guided us to this, and we would not have been guided had Allah not guided us.' (15:97)
