O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, and from the punishment of Hellfire, and from the trials of life and death, and from the evil of the trial of the False Messiah (Dajjal).
Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhabil-qabri, wa min 'adhabi jahannama, wa min fitnatil-mahya wal-mawati, wa min sharri fitnatil-masihid-dajjal.

Virtues & Benefits
Seeking refuge in Allah from the torments of the grave is a practice directly taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. The grave is described as a place of intense questioning and potential punishment, a 'tunnel' or 'pit' of the Hellfire for the wrongdoer, or a paradise garden for the righteous. By reciting this dua, we are following the Sunnah of the best of creation and actively seeking Allah's protection against a significant trial that awaits us after death. The Prophet ﷺ himself would consistently make this dua, highlighting its importance for every believer.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'When any one of you finishes the Tashahhud, he should seek refuge in Allah from four things, saying: Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhabil-qabri, wa min 'adhabi jahannama, wa min fitnatil-mahya wal-mawati, wa min sharri fitnatil-masihid-dajjal.' (Then he should say whatever he wishes). - Sahih Muslim 589. In another narration in Sahih al-Bukhari, it is mentioned that the Prophet ﷺ would supplicate this after the Tashahhud: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhab al-qabr, wa a'udhu bika min fitnat ad-dajjal, wa a'udhu bika min fitnat al-mahya wa al-ma'at. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min al-ma'tham wa al-maghram.' (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, and I seek refuge in You from the trial of the Dajjal, and I seek refuge in You from the trials of life and death. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from sins and debts.) Sahih al-Bukhari 1377.
