Recalling Allah's Mercy to Quench the Fire of Anger

Anger
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 7

أَعُوذُ بِٱللهِ مِنَ ٱلشَّيۡطَـٰنِ ٱلرَّجِيمِ

I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan.

A'udhu billahi minash-Shaytanir-rajim

When to Read

This is the first step prescribed by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ when anger begins to stir. As soon as you feel the heat of anger rising within you, pause and seek refuge in Allah from the whispering of Satan, who is the instigator of such destructive emotions.

How to Read

Recite this phrase, *'A'udhu billahi minash-Shaytanir-rajim'*, sincerely and with a conscious effort to detach yourself from the anger. It's recommended to also change your physical state if possible, as taught by the Prophet ﷺ.

Virtues & Benefits

Anger is a burning ember, and Satan is the fuel. By seeking refuge in Allah, we acknowledge that the true battle is against Satan's influence, which seeks to provoke us. This act of seeking refuge helps to cool the initial heat of anger and reminds us of Allah's vast mercy, which far surpasses any momentary rage. It shifts our focus from the source of our anger to seeking solace and strength from our Creator, allowing us to regain control.

Source & Authentication

Suleiman bin Surd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: While I was sitting with the Prophet ﷺ and two men were slandering each other, one of them had his face flushed and his neck veins were bulging. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'I know a word if he said it, his anger would go away. It is: *'A'udhu billahi minash-Shaytanir-rajim'* (I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan).'
