Dua to Suppress Anger When Faced with Misunderstanding

Anger
Sahih HadithKitab Al-Adab (Book of Manners) 6048

أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ

I seek refuge in Allah from Satan, the rejected.

A'udhu billahi minash-shaytanir-rajim

When to Read

When you feel anger beginning to boil within you, especially in those moments where your actions are misconstrued, your words twisted, or your pure intentions doubted. It’s for those frustrating times when someone simply doesn't 'get' you, and the injustice of it starts to churn. Recite this dua the very instant you feel that familiar heat of anger rising, before it takes hold.

How to Read

Recite this powerful dua with full conviction, acknowledging that anger is often a whisper from Shaytan, intended to provoke you. Seeking Allah's protection is the most direct and effective shield against his influence. Beyond recitation, remember the Prophet's ﷺ advice: if you are standing, sit down; if sitting, lie down. Make wudu, for water extinguishes fire. And above all, strive to remain silent, for silence is a powerful antidote to angry words.

Virtues & Benefits

The most immediate benefit, as confirmed by the Prophet ﷺ himself, is the **suppression of anger**. Anger, as we know, is a destructive emotion often sparked by Shaytan to make us say or do regrettable things. By seeking refuge in Allah, you are essentially extinguishing that spark before it turns into a raging fire. This brings tranquility to the heart, helps you maintain composure, and allows you to respond with wisdom rather than impulsive rage. It's a powerful tool for **self-control** and a beautiful way to earn Allah's pleasure by adhering to the Sunnah in moments of intense emotion.

Narrated Sulaiman ibn Surad (may Allah be pleased with him): "I was sitting with the Prophet (ﷺ) and two men were reviling each other. One of them became red in the face and his veins became swollen. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, 'I know a word which, if he were to say it, what he feels would disappear. If he were to say: 'A'udhu billahi minash-shaytanir-rajim (I seek refuge in Allah from Satan, the rejected),' what he feels would disappear.'" — Sahih al-Bukhari 6048
