Dua for Suppressing Anger When Faced with Envy

Anger
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 7

أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ

I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan.

A'udhu billahi minash-shaytanir-rajeem

When to Read

This practice is not a specific dua itself, but a general Sunnah action. When you feel the flames of anger rising, perhaps sparked by envy from someone else's success or blessings, the first step is to seek refuge in Allah from Satan. Satan is often the instigator of negative emotions like anger and envy, whispering doubts and fueling these feelings. By reciting this simple yet profound phrase, you acknowledge Allah's power over Satan and ask for His protection, creating a spiritual barrier.

How to Read

Recite 'A'udhu billahi minash-shaytanir-rajeem' clearly and with sincerity, feeling the weight of seeking protection from the one who tries to mislead us. This is often done even before speaking or acting when anger arises. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself taught us this as a primary defense against Satan's influence, which is crucial when dealing with emotions like envy.

Virtues & Benefits

Seeking refuge in Allah is the first line of defense against negative influences, including those that lead to anger and envy. It helps to remind us that these feelings are often amplified or instigated by Shaytan, and that true strength and peace come from Allah. By breaking the cycle of anger before it takes hold, we preserve our relationships, our peace of mind, and our worship.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'When one of you gets angry, he should remain silent.' And in another narration, the Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'Indeed, anger is from Satan, and Satan was created of fire. The extinguishes are (saying) La ilaha illa Allah (There is no god but Allah) and Subhan Allah (Glory be to Allah).' (Tirmidhi, Sahih). The act of seeking refuge from Satan (A'udhu billahi minash-shaytanir-rajeem) is a foundational practice in warding off Satan's whispers, which often fuel anger and envy. This hadith highlights the connection between anger and Satan, making the act of seeking refuge directly relevant.
