A man asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: 'O Messenger of Allah, what should I ask my Lord?' He said: 'Ask Allah for 'afiyah (well-being) in this life and the Hereafter.' He asked again: 'O Messenger of Allah, what should I ask my Lord?' He said: 'O Allah, I ask You for 'afiyah in this world and the Hereafter.' Then he asked again: 'O Messenger of Allah, what should I ask my Lord?' He said: 'Ask Allah for forgiveness and 'afiyah in this world and the Hereafter. I have not been given anything better than 'afiyah.' Another narration states: The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ visited a man from among his companions and asked him: 'How do you wake up in the morning?' He said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I wake up believing in what Allah has decreed.' He said: 'You are a believer.' He said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I wake up hating the disbelievers.' He said: 'Are you a Muslim?' He said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Then what is the harm that you hate them?' Then he said: 'O Messenger of Allah, what should I ask for?' He said: 'Ask Allah for 'afiyah (well-being).' Then he said: 'O Messenger of Allah, what should I ask for?' He said: 'Ask Allah for forgiveness and 'afiyah.' Then he said: 'O Messenger of Allah, what should I ask for?' He said: 'Ask Allah for forgiveness and 'afiyah in this world and the Hereafter.' The Prophet ﷺ then said: 'O Allah, forgive me, have mercy on me, guide me, grant me health and sustenance.'
