Dua for Suppressing Anger During Ramadan

Anger
Hasan HadithSunan Ibn Majah 925

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا، وَرِزْقًا طَيِّبًا، وَعَمَلًا مُتَقَبَّلًا

O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, good provision, and acceptable deeds.

Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman naafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan

When to Read

This dua is particularly relevant during Ramadan. While fasting, our bodies are disciplined, but our emotions still need conscious effort. When you feel the heat of anger rising, perhaps due to a misunderstanding, a frustrating situation, or even just the general discomfort of fasting, take a moment. Before reacting, make this sincere supplication to seek Allah's help in managing your anger. It's a beautiful way to remind yourself of your ultimate goals for Ramadan: purifying the self, seeking knowledge, and pleasing Allah.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and focus, ideally after the obligatory prayers or during the blessed hours of Ramadan like the pre-dawn meal (suhoor) or after iftar. Understand the meaning of each request: seeking knowledge that benefits, sustenance that is pure, and deeds that are accepted by Allah. This act of supplication itself is a way of turning to Allah for strength, which is a key aspect of managing anger. Try to visualize the peace and control that comes with these blessings. If you feel anger building, pause, take a deep breath, and then recite this dua, asking Allah to grant you what you are asking for, specifically in relation to controlling your temper.

Virtues & Benefits

While this specific dua is a comprehensive request for overall well-being, its benefit in suppressing anger during Ramadan is profound. By asking for beneficial knowledge, we seek understanding and wisdom to navigate difficult situations without resorting to anger. By asking for good provision, we remind ourselves of Allah's blessings, fostering gratitude which counters impatience and frustration. Most importantly, asking for acceptable deeds reinforces our commitment to acting according to Islamic etiquette, which includes patience and forbearance, especially during Ramadan when our actions carry extra weight. This dua helps shift our focus from the trigger of anger to the higher purpose of pleasing Allah, thereby redirecting our emotional response. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us about the immense reward of controlling anger: 'The strong man is not the one who wrestles well, but the strong one is the one who controls himself when he is angry.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 6114)
