Dua for Suppressing Anger and Resisting Immorality

Anger
Hasan HadithSunan At-Tirmidhi 2949

O Allah, I ask You to enable me to do good deeds, and to abandon evil deeds, and to love the poor. And I ask You to forgive me and have mercy on me. And when You intend to try Your creation, take me to Yourself without putting me to trial. And I ask You for Your love, and the love of those who love You, and the love of deeds which bring me closer to Your love.

Allahumma inni as'aluka fi'lal khayrat, wa tarkal munkarat, wa hubbal masakin, wa an taghfira li wa tarhamani, wa idha aradta fi khalqika fitnatan fa tawaffani ilayka ghayra maftun. Wa as'aluka hubbak, wa hubba man yuhibbuk, wa hubba 'amalin yuqarribuni ila hubbik.

When to Read

This is a comprehensive dua that can be recited at any time, especially when feeling tempted by immoral acts or when anger begins to stir. It's particularly potent when made after obligatory prayers or during the blessed times like the last third of the night.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and a humble heart. Focus on the meaning of each phrase, reflecting on your dependence on Allah for strength to do good, avoid evil, and earn His pleasure. Raise your hands as you make dua and face the Qiblah if possible.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encompasses seeking Allah's help in fulfilling obligations, abstaining from prohibitions, cultivating compassion for the less fortunate, and seeking forgiveness and mercy. It also includes protection from trials and a request for love of Allah, love of those beloved to Him, and the love of actions that lead one closer to Him. By asking for protection from trials, we indirectly seek the strength to resist temptations that lead to immorality. Cultivating love for good deeds and the people who do them naturally pushes us away from evil.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to teach them this supplication, just as he used to teach them a Surah from the Qur'an. He would say: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka fi'lal khayrat, wa tarkal munkarat, wa hubbal masakin, wa an taghfira li wa tarhamani, wa idha aradta fi khalqika fitnatan fa tawaffani ilayka ghayra maftun. Wa as'aluka hubbak, wa hubba man yuhibbuk, wa hubba 'amalin yuqarribuni ila hubbik.' Translation: 'O Allah, I ask You to enable me to do good deeds, and to abandon evil deeds, and to love the poor. And I ask You to forgive me and have mercy on me. And when You intend to try Your creation, take me to Yourself without putting me to trial. And I ask You for Your love, and the love of those who love You, and the love of deeds which bring me closer to Your love.'
