Now, imagine that same space imbued with a silent intention, a conscious channeling of divine purpose from the very first brick laid. This isn't just about putting up walls; it's about the Sunnah of Tashyeed al-Baniyan, building structures with intention, a concept beautifully woven into the fabric of our faith. It’s about transforming a simple act of construction or renovation into a profoundly spiritual endeavor.

It’s easy to see buildings as mere bricks and mortar, steel and glass. We focus on the aesthetics, the functionality, the cost. But for a believer, every action, no matter how mundane, carries the potential for worship. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us to imbue our lives with meaning, and this extends to the very spaces we inhabit and create. Building with intention means recognizing that our homes, our places of work, our community centers – they are not just physical structures, but spaces that will witness our lives, our prayers, our families, our efforts.

Laying the Foundation: What is Tashyeed al-Baniyan?

At its heart, Tashyeed al-Baniyan is the Islamic principle of constructing and renovating with a conscious awareness of Allah and a purposeful intention. Translation: "And the earth - We have spread it out, and cast therein firmly set mountains, and caused to grow therein of all kinds [something] beautiful in pairs."

Arabic: كُنَّا مَعَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي سَفَرٍ، فَنَزَلْنَا، فَقَالَ: «هَلْ مَعَ أَحَدٍ مِنْكُمْ طَعَامٌ؟» قُلْنَا: لَا، قَالَ: «فَإِنِّي رَأَيْتُكُمْ جِعْتُمْ، فَصُومُوا، ثُمَّ نَزَلَ، فَقَالَ: «إِذَا حَضَرَتْ صَلَاةُ الْعِشَاءِ، وَقَدْ وُضِعَ الطَّعَامُ، فَأَبْدِئُوا بِهِ قَبْلَ أَنْ تُصَلُّوا»، وَإِنَّهُ رَأَى خُفَّيْ عُتْبَةَ بْنِ أَسِيدٍ مُتَخَلِّخَيْنِ، فَقَالَ: «مَنْ رَأَى خُفَّيْ عُتْبَةَ مُتَخَلِّخَيْنِ؟» فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ: أَنَا، قَالَ: «فَاذْهَبْ فَأَرِنِيهِ» فَانْطَلَقَ، فَجَاءَ فَقَالَ: «قَدْ أَخَذْتُهُمَا» فَأَتَى بِهِمَا، فَنَعَلَهُمَا النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ.

Translation: We were with the Prophet ﷺ on a journey, and we camped. He asked, "Does anyone have food?" We said, "No." He said, "You must be hungry, so fast." Then he descended and said, "When the 'Isha' prayer is due, and the food has been served, start eating before you pray." He saw the sandals of Utbah bin Asid were worn out. He asked, "Who sees the worn-out sandals of Utbah bin Asid?" A man said, "I do." He said, "Go and show them to me." So he went and came back saying, "I have taken them." He brought them, and the Prophet ﷺ put them on.

Transliteration: Kunna ma'a an-Nabiyyi ﷺ fee safarin, fa nazalna, fa qala: "Hal ma'a ahadin minkum ta'am?" Qulna: La. Qala: "Fa innee ra'aytukum ji'tum, fa sumoo, thumma nazala, fa qala: "Idha hadarat salatul 'isha'i, wa qad wudi'a at-ta'amu, fa abdi'oo bihi qabla an tusalloo". Wa innahu ra'aa khuffay 'Utbah bin Asid muthakhlikhayn, fa qala: "Man ra'aa khuffay 'Utbah muthakhlikhayn?" Fa qala rajulun: Ana. Qala: "Fadhhab fa arineeh." Fa intalaqa, fa jaa'a fa qala: "Qad akhadhtuhuma." Fa ataa bihim, fa na'alahuma an-Nabiyyu ﷺ.

Arabic: وَلَا تَبْخَسُوا النَّاسَ أَشْيَاءَهُمْ وَلَا تَعْثَوْا فِي الْأَرْضِ مُفْسِدِينَ

Translation: "And do not deprive people of their due rights, and do not commit abuse or spread corruption in the land."

Transliteration: Wa la tabkhasoo an-nasa ashya'ahum wa la ta'thaw fil-arḍi mufsideen

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also taught us about the importance of a good intention in all our actions, which is the bedrock of Tashyeed al-Baniyan.

Arabic: عَن عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ يَقُولُ « إِنَّمَا الأَعْمَالُ بِالنِّيَّاتِ، وَإِنَّمَا لِكُلِّ امْرِىٍّ مَا نَوَى، فَمَنْ كَانَتْ هِجْرَتُهُ إِلَى دُنْيَا يُصِيبُهَا، أَوْ إِلَى امْرَأَةٍ يَنْكِحُهَا، فَهِجْرَتُهُ إِلَى مَا هَاجَرَ إِلَيْهِ ».

Translation: It is narrated on the authority of Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) that he heard Allah's Messenger ﷺ say: "Actions are judged by intentions. A man will be rewarded for nothing other than what he intended. His emigration is for the sake of Allah and His Messenger, or if he emigrates for worldly gain or for a woman to marry, then his emigration is for that which he emigrated."

Transliteration: 'An 'Umar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (raḍiya Allāhu 'anhu) qāla: Sami'tu Rasūla Allāhi ﷺ yaqūl: "Innamal a'mālu bin-niyyāt, wa innamā likulli imri'in mā nawā. Fa man kānat hijratuhu ilā dunyā yusībuhā, aw ilā imra'atin yankiḥuhā, fa hijratuhu ilā mā hājara ilayh."

Wisdom: Building a home is meant to be a source of peace and security. Unlawful wealth brings anxiety and divine displeasure, making the structure itself a potential source of torment, not comfort.

2. Purposeful Design and Planning:

Think about the intended use of the structure. Is it a family home? A place of worship? A commercial space? The design should reflect this purpose, ensuring functionality, safety, and suitability for its occupants.

Action: Consult with architects and builders who understand your needs and can translate them into practical designs. Consider factors like natural light, ventilation, accessibility, and energy efficiency.
Wisdom: A well-planned structure serves its purpose effectively, minimizing waste and maximizing benefit. It shows respect for the resources Allah has provided and for the people who will use the space.

3. Ethical Sourcing of Materials and Labor:

The Prophet ﷺ emphasized fairness in all dealings. This extends to purchasing building materials and hiring workers.

Action: Choose reputable suppliers and ensure materials are of good quality. Treat your workers with respect, pay them fairly and on time, and ensure safe working conditions. Avoid exploiting anyone in the process.
Wisdom: Every element of the building should be acquired through honest means. Exploiting others, even in subtle ways, taints the entire project and can lead to unforeseen problems.

4. Making Dua and Invoking Allah's Name:

Just as we start our day with dua, we should invoke Allah’s name when undertaking significant actions like building.

Action: Before starting construction or renovation, make dua. Recite Bismillah ("In the name of Allah") before commencing work each day. Seek Allah's protection from accidents and grant you success.
Wisdom: Invoking Allah’s name is a declaration of our reliance on Him and an acknowledgment of His dominion. It seeks His barakah (blessings) and protection over the project and all involved.

Arabic: اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ خَيْرَهَا وَخَيْرَ أَهْلِهَا وَخَيْرَ مَا فِيهَا، وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّهَا وَشَرِّ أَهْلِهَا وَشَرِّ مَا فِيهَا

Translation: "O Allah, I ask You for its goodness, the goodness of its inhabitants, and the goodness of what is in it. I seek refuge in You from its evil, the evil of its inhabitants, and the evil of what is in it."

Transliteration: Allāhumma innī as'aluka khayrahā wa khayra ahlihā wa khayra mā fīhā, wa a'ūdhubika min sharrhā wa sharri ahlihā wa sharri mā fīhā.

Wisdom: Renovation, like new construction, should be a step towards betterment, fulfilling a need or enhancing well-being, rather than vanity.

The Sunnah encourages us to build not just for ourselves but for the benefit of the wider community.

Action: Consider building community facilities, mosques, schools, or even homes for those in need. When building your own home, think about how it integrates with the neighborhood.
Wisdom: Our faith teaches us the immense reward in actions that benefit others. A purposefully built structure can become a source of ongoing Sadaqah Jariyah (continuous charity).

The Prophet ﷺ said:

Arabic: عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ « مَنْ بَنَى مَسْجِدًا بَنَى اللَّهُ لَهُ مِثْلَهُ فِي الْجَنَّةِ ».

Translation: It is narrated on the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that Allah's Messenger ﷺ said: "Whoever builds a mosque, Allah will build for him a similar house in Paradise."

Transliteration: 'An Abī Hurayrata (raḍiya Allāhu 'anhu) anna Rasūla Allāhi ﷺ qāla: "Man banā masjidan banā Allāhu lahu mithlahu fil-Jannah."

Correction: Focus on building a comfortable, functional, and aesthetically pleasing space that meets your needs, without extravagance. Remember that true wealth is in contentment and Allah's pleasure.

2. Neglecting Safety and Quality:

Cutting corners on safety regulations or using substandard materials to save money can have dire consequences.

Mistake: Ignoring building codes, using cheap materials that compromise structural integrity, or rushing the job without proper supervision.
Correction: Prioritize safety and quality. A structure meant for well-being should not become a hazard. Consult professionals and ensure adherence to standards. Allah loves those who perfect their craft.

3. Disregard for Neighbors and Environment:

Building without considering the impact on neighbors or the environment is contrary to the spirit of responsible stewardship.

Mistake: Blocking sunlight to a neighbor's property, creating excessive noise pollution without consideration, or using materials that harm the environment without necessity.
Correction: Be considerate of your neighbors and the environment. Seek designs that are harmonious with the surroundings and minimize negative impacts.

4. Unlawful Gains:

As mentioned earlier, any construction built with money earned through illegal or unethical means is fundamentally flawed.

Mistake: Using funds from interest-based loans, bribery, or fraudulent dealings to finance construction.
Correction: Ensure all finances are halal. This is non-negotiable for building with divine awareness.

5. Building with a Negative Intention:

Constructing buildings that are intended for harmful purposes, such as illegal activities or places that promote sin.

Mistake: Building a property to facilitate gambling, illicit trade, or any other activity that displeases Allah.
Correction: The purpose of the building itself must be permissible and beneficial.

Building a Legacy of Purpose
