Sunnah of Greeting (Salam)
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ once walked past a group of people and said, "Shall I not tell you of something by which Allah obliterates sins and raises ranks?" They said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." He ﷺ said, "It is to give the Salam to everyone, whether you know them or not." (Sahih Muslim 54)
Think about that for a moment. Such a simple act, something we might do without even realizing its profound impact. Giving Salam is more than just a greeting; it's a cornerstone of our Islamic community, a sunnah that weaves us together with threads of mercy, love, and mutual respect. It’s a practice we can all easily integrate into our lives, and one that carries immense reward.
The Essence of Salam: More Than Just a Word
When we say "Assalamu alaikum" (Peace be upon you), we're not just saying hello. We're invoking Allah's peace and security upon the person we're greeting. This is beautifully reflected in the Quran:
Arabic: وَإِذَا حُيِّيتُمْ بِتَحِيَّةٍ فَحَيُّوا بِأَحْسَنَ مِنْهَا أَوْ رُدُّوهَا ۗ إِنَّ اللَّهَ كَانَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ حَسِيبًا
Translation: "And when you are greeted with a greeting, greet [in return] with what is better or [at least] of its likeness. Indeed, Allah is ever, over all things, Accountant."
Transliteration: Wa idha huyyitum bitahiyyatin fahayyu bi ahsana minha aw rudduha, innallaha kana 'ala kulli shay'in hasiba
— Al-Nisa 4:86
This verse from Surah Al-Nisa instructs us to respond to a greeting with something equal or even better. Our Prophet ﷺ taught us that the best greeting is "Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh" (Peace be upon you, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings).
The very act of initiating and responding to Salam is a declaration of peace, a tangible expression of the brotherhood and sisterhood that Islam fosters. It’s a way of acknowledging each other's presence, worth, and humanity in the sight of Allah.
The Sunnah in Action: How the Prophet ﷺ Taught Us to Greet
Our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was the living embodiment of this beautiful sunnah. His practice was a constant lesson for us, rich with detail and overflowing with compassion.
Who to Greet? Everyone.
One of the most striking aspects of the Prophet's ﷺ greeting was its inclusivity. He didn't reserve it for his close companions or those he knew well.
Translation: The Prophet enumerated many virtuous deeds, emphasizing that even the simplest acts of worship and kindness carry immense reward with Allah.
