Arabic: اللَّهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الْحَيُّ الْقَيُّومُ ۚ لَا تَأْخُذُهُ سِنَةٌ وَلَا نَوْمٌ ۚ لَّهُ مَا فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمَا فِي الْأَرْضِ ۗ مَن ذَا الَّذِي يَشْفَعُ عِندَهُ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِهِ ۚ يَعْلَمُ مَا بَيْنَ أَيْدِيهِمْ وَمَا خَلْفَهُمْ ۖ وَلَا يُحِيطُونَ بِشَيْءٍ مِّنْ عِلْمِهِ إِلَّا مَا شَاءَ ۚ وَسِعَ كُرْسِيُّهُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ ۖ وَلَا يَئُودُهُ حِفْظُهُمَا ۚ وَهُوَ الْعَلِيُّ الْعَظِيمُ

Translation: "Allah – there is no deity except Him, the Living, the Sustainer of [all existence]. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His throne extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great."

The Living, The Sustainer (Al-Hayy al-Qayyum)

This is the very foundation. Allah is 'Al-Hayy,' the Ever-Living, whose existence is eternal and uncaused. He is 'Al-Qayyum,' the Self-Subsisting, the One by whom all things are sustained. Everything relies on Him, while He relies on no one. This understanding alone can bring immense peace and a deep sense of reliance on our Creator.

Neither Drowsiness Nor Sleep

This highlights Allah's perfect awareness and control. He is never unaware, never negligent. While we may falter, rest, or be overcome by fatigue, Allah is constantly watching over His creation, managing every affair with perfect precision.

His Knowledge Encompasses All

"He knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them." This encompasses past, present, and future. His knowledge is absolute, unlike ours, which is limited and partial. This can comfort us when we worry about the future or regret the past; Allah has the ultimate perspective.

His Throne Extends Over Heavens and Earth

The 'Kursi' (Throne) mentioned here is not the same as 'Arsh' (the Divine Throne). The Kursi is the footstool of the Arsh, and the vastness it represents is beyond human comprehension. If the footstool is this immense, imagine the glory of the Arsh itself! This description underscores Allah's supreme dominion.

Preservation Tires Him Not

This is a powerful assurance. The immense task of maintaining and governing the entire universe – from the smallest atom to the largest galaxy – doesn't burden Allah in the slightest. His power is infinite, His strength limitless.

Hadith on the Virtue of Ayat al-Kursi

Beyond its profound meaning, numerous hadith highlight the practical benefits and immense reward associated with reciting Ayat al-Kursi. These narrations offer us tangible reasons to make it a regular part of our lives.

Protection from Shaytan

One of the most frequently mentioned benefits is protection from the whispers and harm of Shaytan. The Jinn, often associated with unseen mischief, are repelled by this verse.

Ubay ibn Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: "The greatest verse in the Book of Allah is Ayat al-Kursi." (Related by Muslim and Ahmad. It is also found in Nasa'i and others).

In another powerful narration, Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: "Do not make your houses like graves, for indeed, the house from which Surat Al-Baqarah is recited is not entered by Shaytan." (Sahih Muslim 780). While this refers to the entire Surah, Ayat al-Kursi is its pinnacle, carrying immense spiritual weight.

Furthermore, there's a famous story involving Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) himself. He was tasked with guarding the Zakat (charity) of Ramadan. He saw a thief trying to steal from the stored dates. When Abu Hurairah caught him, the thief pleaded, "I am needy, I have a family, I am in great distress." Abu Hurairah let him go. The next day, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ asked him, "O Abu Hurairah, what did your prisoner do yesterday?" Abu Hurairah recounted the story. The Prophet ﷺ then said: "Verily, he told you a lie, and he will return."

Abu Hurairah guarded the Zakat again, and the thief returned. He caught him and the thief said, "Let me go, and I will teach you words that Allah will benefit you with." Abu Hurairah asked, "What are they?" The thief replied, "When you go to your bed, recite Ayat al-Kursi: 'Allah – there is no deity except Him, the Living, the Sustainer.' (2:255) …until the end of the verse. Then a guardian from Allah will remain with you, and Shaytan will not come near you until morning." (Sahih al-Bukhari 5010). The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ later confirmed to Abu Hurairah that the thief was Shaytan himself, and what he had taught Abu Hurairah was the truth.

This hadith vividly illustrates the protective power of Ayat al-Kursi against the direct assault of Shaytan.

A Stairway to Paradise

The reward for reciting this verse is immense, even linking it to entry into Jannah (Paradise).

Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) stated: "No servant recites Ayat al-Kursi after every obligatory prayer, but his soul becomes (like) a soul of the prophets, and his heart becomes (like) the hearts of the knowledgeable, and his protection is from all ills and his sustenance is abundant." (Related by Al-Tabarani in Al-Kabir, and Ibn Hibban. Scholars like Al-Albani and Al-Suyuti have authenticated it).

Another narration states that whoever recites it after completing an obligatory prayer, nothing stands between him and Paradise except death. (Related by Al-Nasa'i and authenticated by Al-Albani).

This means that if you die immediately after reciting it following a prayer, you are guaranteed Paradise! This is a tremendous promise from our Creator.

The Best Du'a

When a poor man asked the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ about the best way to seek from Allah, he replied, "O my servant! Ask your Lord for your needs and your desires." The man asked, "O Messenger of Allah, what are the best supplications?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "The best supplications are Ayat al-Kursi, and the supplication of the person with a worried heart (Dua al-Ham), and the supplication of the oppressed." (Related by Al-Hakim, and authenticated by Al-Albani).

This indicates that Ayat al-Kursi is not just a statement of Tawhid (Oneness of Allah) but also a powerful form of supplication that encompasses seeking Allah's help and protection.
